Re-porking our Porker

June 12, 2008

So the last time BabyN went to the doctor, about 2 1/2 months ago, he weighed just under 17 pounds.  It was a little more than 17 on our scale at home.  Yesterday when I weighed him on our home scale, fully clothed and diapered, he was 17 1/2 pounds.  That means in 2 1/2 months he hasn’t gained more than about 1/2 a pound.

You may remember that he was quite a porker when he was born, coming in solidly over eight pounds.  I fully expected that his weight gain would slow down eventually because there was no way a kid of mine could continue above the 50th percentile for too long.  If he ended up with my metabolism, then it would be tough to keep him gaining weight at all.

Well, it seems that has happened.  This kid moves ALL THE TIME.  His arms are always waving and his legs kicking around.  The only time it stops–mostly–is when he sleeps.  No wonder he’s only gained half a pound in 2 1/2 months.

His next doctor’s appointment is in less than two weeks.  I know the doctor is going to be concerned about the lack of weight gain, so I decided to try to do something about it before then if at all possible.

Last night at dinner, I just kept feeding him until he was almost at the point of spitting out his food.  Before, he had been getting one jar of stage 2 baby food and a large quantity of rice cereal.  Last night, he ate three (yes, three!) jars of baby food and even more rice cereal.  He would have eaten more, but I was out of pumped breast milk to make more cereal for him and reluctant to open yet another jar of food.  I nursed him instead, and he ate pretty well.

This morning he ate at least twice as much as usual too.  And I think we’re going to introduce lunch, a good way to cram even more food into him.

It turns out we were just starving the poor kid.  At this rate, he will have gained a full pound at least by the time we see the doctor in two weeks.

That is, if we can still afford to go to the doctor by then.  He’s going to eat us out of house and home at this rate.  I don’t even want to think what his teenage years are going to be like.  He’d better be planning to get a part-time job already because we’re going to need him to help buy his own food if he keeps eating like this.
